Adjustable Bed and Chair Raisers

These plastic (polypropylene) blocks are round with a central indentation into which legs or castors sit. This raises the height of beds and chairs. Raising the height of a piece of furniture will help place the hips above the knees when sitting, making it easier to stand up and sit down.
Having higher furniture is ideal for people who have just undergone hip or knee surgery, or who otherwise have mobility issues in their lower bodies. Bed and chair raisers should be used on all furniture that allows the knees to raise above the hips when sitting down. At Vital Living, we sell adjustable chair and bed raisers, which are available in 40mm or 100mm heights. These raisers can also be stacked to create 140mm height. Each raiser is sold separately. You can purchase raisers online or in-store in Port Macquarie, Forster or Taree.
Measuring Furniture for a Bed or Chair Raiser
Bed and chair raisers are only beneficial when they are the correct height. Figuring out the required height for your furniture is very easy and can be done in a few steps:
- Measure the height of the user’s legs from the floor to the back of their knee, making sure to account for the height of shoes they regularly wear around the house.
- Measure the height of the chairs needing to be raised from the floor to the top of the seat whilst it is being sat on and measure the height of the bed from the floor to the top of the mattress whilst it is being sat on.
- Subtract the second measurement from the first measurement to get the height required for the bed and chair raisers.
For example, if the user’s leg from the floor to the back of their knee is 44cm and the height of the chair from the floor to the top of the seat while depressed is 40cm, you would need 4cm or 40mm extra height for the chair to be suitable.
To ensure furniture remains stable, it is important to ensure all legs are the same height. Adding too much height may make the furniture uncomfortable so only raise it to the height needed to keep the knees below the hips.
